Stand out from the crowd — exceptional among peers.

Literal meaning

exit (出) — category (类) — rise above (拔) — peak (萃)

Origin

Mencius (《孟子·公孙丑上》). The full passage describes how Confucius surpassed every sage who came before him: 出于其类,拔乎其萃,自生民以来,未有盛于孔子也 — "Rising above his category, surpassing the peak; since the birth of humankind there has been none greater than Confucius." The compressed four-character form 出类拔萃 has been used since as the standard way to mark someone as exceptional within their field.
