Literal meaning
know (知) — sound (音) — hard (难) — find (觅)
Origin
The Spring and Autumn-period story of Bo Ya (伯牙) and Zhong Ziqi (钟子期). Bo Ya was a master of the guqin; whenever he played thinking of mountains, Zhong said "as lofty as Mount Tai," and whenever he played thinking of rivers, Zhong said "as flowing as the Yangtze." Zhong was the only person who truly heard what Bo Ya meant in his music. When Zhong died, Bo Ya broke his qin and never played again, declaring his 知音 was gone. From that story, 知音 became the standard Chinese term for someone who genuinely understands you — and 知音难觅 captures the rarity of finding one.

Usage & nuances
Literary, slightly wistful tone. The two-character noun 知音 is more common in everyday speech ("my 知音"); the four-character 知音难觅 leans into the rarity and shows up more in reflective writing.
