Origin
Adapted from Sun Tzu's Art of War (《孙子兵法·九地》): 夫吴人与越人相恶也，当其同舟而济，遇风，其相救也如左右手 — "The people of Wu and Yue are enemies, but if they happen to share a boat crossing a river and a storm hits, they help each other like the two hands of one body." Sun Tzu's point was about shared danger forcing cooperation between people otherwise at odds. The phrase has carried that meaning forward — solidarity through hardship, even between people who wouldn't choose each other in calm times.
